Susan Calman: My secret Scotland | Travel

The great thing about filming Secret Scotland was it took me to vast swathes of this country I’d never seen before. Living in Glasgow as a child, driving up to the Highlands wasn’t really an option with three kids and two dogs. Plus, we Calmans love to return to the same place every year. For us, that place was Arran. Getting on that ferry at Ardrossan — for me, that says summer holidays.

Most of our time was spent on Blackwaterfoot Beach. The water ranged from freezing to very freezing. We have snapshots of us grinning in swimsuits while the wind whipped along the beach, or standing in a blizzard at the summit of Goat Fell, wearing a jumper and wellies. It was preparation for…
