Why I refused to join the honeymoon arms race

I’ve recently returned from honeymoon. We had a lovely time, thank you. No, we weren’t in the Maldives — still the UK’s go-to destination for newlyweds, according to the luxury operator Scott Dunn. Nor did we wash up on a far-flung Indonesian island you’ve never heard of. No, not an African safari, either — à la (we suspect) Harry and Meghan.

In fact, we went to good old Italy. I know, I know — how modest. But don’t be disappointed. It’s my favourite destination, and where we had our first holiday (in Sardinia) as a couple, four years ago.

I was delighted with our decision, but arriving at it was as stressful as trimming the wedding guest list and committing to a dress. Because honeymoons…
