Swiss man traveling through Americas visits Parker | News
He’s on an adventure throughout the Americas. Christian Huber is from Zurich, Switzerland. Along with his dog, Zeus, he’s been traveling around the United States and Canada in his 1973 Volkswagen van since May of 2019. He plans to travel for about two years and has already logged 25,000 miles.
Huber was in Parker Nov. 14 and paid a visit to Allen May at the 12th Street Barber Shop. They got to know each other because they’re both involved with the hair care product, Shiner Gold. He decided to have a chat with the Pioneer.
He came into North America via Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He traveled across Canada and went to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
“I got to see the Arctic Ocean,” he said. “It was too cold to swim in it, though.”
Huber said he came back to the United States through Washington State. He visited New Orleans, Mount Rushmore and Montana before coming to Arizona. He has stopped in 11 national parks.
As for where he’s going next, Huber said he’d like to visit Joshua Tree National Park, Sequoia National Park and San Diego. Starting sometime in December, he wants to travel through Mexico.
Huber said he’s following what his parents did on their honeymoon. He added he likes to see new places and meet new people. He said one of his more interesting experiences came when he was parked alongside a highway in Alaska. He was miles from any towns or settlements, but a fellow approached him and offered him a breakfast of steak and eggs. This same fellow later offered him lunch.
Huber has also received a lot of support from the Volkswagen community in America.
“They’re amazing,” he said.
The visit to the 12th Street Barber Shop helped highlight one of the differences between Americans and Europeans. When May said Joshua Tree National Park was just a short hop from Parker, maybe 100 miles, Huber replied that, for Europeans, 100 miles is considered a long distance.
