Letters: in praise of Central America; cruise blues; and honeymooning in Reykjavik

✉ As Alex Robinson’s excellent itinerary suggests, Guatemala is a revelation (“The Big Trip: Central America”, last week). We visited in 2004 and first stayed in Flores, an enchanting small town on an island in a 20-mile-long lake. From there we made the lovely trip to Tikal, located in a national park. Unlike some of the Mayan ruins in Mexico and Belize, it’s not swampy and doesn’t have the tackiness of Tulum. We saw pacas (large, stripy wild guinea pigs), jaguarundis, toucans, red macaws and howler monkeys. We also travelled up the Rio La Pasion to visit the Mayan ruins at Ceibal.
