Canada has banned cruises through October to quell spread of coronavirus

Canada has banned cruises and ferries carrying more than 100 people with overnight capacity from operating in its waters.

“Our Government is committed to protecting Canadians, particularly during these challenging times,” Marc Garneau, Canada’s transport minister, said in a statement Friday. “It is for that reason I am announcing updated measures for cruise ships and other passenger vessels in Canada, which includes prohibiting larger cruise ships from operating in Canadian waters until Oct. 31, 2020.”

The original ban, issued in March, stated that ships with more than 500 people aboard could not dock in the country until July 1, according to CTV News. Garneau’s updated measures extend and tighten that ban.

Starting July 1, it will be up to local authorities to set their own regulations on other passenger vehicles carrying under 100 people, according to the statement.
