Rocket debris lands on cruise ship in Israel
Remnants from a destroyed Palestinian rocket have landed on a cruise ship as it departed from the Israeli port of Ashod.
Shrapnel from a shell landed on the deck of the AIDAdiva as it departed the port in southern Israel at around 20.30 last night but none of the 2,700 passengers or crew were hurt in the incident.
Reports said that the rocket had been fired by Palestinian group Hamas at Israeli targets, and it had been destroyed by Israel’s defence forces.
AIDA Cruises said that nobody had been injured in the incident and there was no damage to the ship.
The German-based company, which is part of cruise giant Carnival Corp, said that “small particles” of the rocket had landed on the passenger deck and had been picked up by crew.
The ship continued on its journey to the Greek island of Crete without any delay to the cruise.
Hansjorg Kunze, vice-president of communication and sustainability for AIDA Cruises, said: “We are very sorry that the guests of AIDAdiva were witnesses to this incident. We assure all our guests that the safety of guests and crew is our top priority at all times.
“The current security situation in Israel has been and is constantly monitored by us.”
Hamas said it had fired rockets into southern Israel following the death of five of its fighters. Israel responded by launching air strikes.
