Wedding guests criticize ‘honeyfund’ trend, calling them ‘tacky’

Sites like GoFundMe have made honey funds popular in recent years.

Media: Money

Let’s be honest, weddings are expensive and sometimes there may not be much money left over for a proper honeymoon, so many couples are turning to their guests to fund their post-wedding vacation.

In a blog post, social media website Pinterest explained the way weddings have changed on their platform this year and noted that searches for “honeymoon funds” have increased by 200 percent

However, people on wedding discussion forums on The Knot, a website that serves as a virtual wedding planner, firmly believe that honeymoon funds, also known as “honeyfunds” are “tacky” and “rude.”

“I think you will find here that most people do not find it acceptable or common. I would not create a honeymoon fund site or ask people directly for money,” Knottiej said in a January 24 forum.

“Any request for money, either straightforward or disguised as a travel experience, is tacky and wrong,” MobKaz said the same discussion page on The Knot.

Another user on May 9  commented along the same tune saying, “You are asking for money which is tacky and gross. Honeymoon registries are not “traditional.” Asking for money is not “traditional.” And a honeymoon registry is doubly rude because not only are you asking for money.

“A honeymoon is not a necessity. If you can’t afford to pay for one, don’t have one. Your marriage will still be valid. Or save up the money yourself and take a belated honeymoon,” they continued.

Other users suggest simply not having a registry and opting for a cards-only policy because guests usually give a check or cash with their cards – thus an unofficial “honeymoon fund.”
