What’s the Best Time to Visit the Caribbean?

The Caribbean continues to be one of the most popular visitor destinations in the world. Idyllic beaches, endless sunshine and Caribbean hospitality are all part of the allure. But nothing can ruin a vacation getaway quite like an extended heatwave or a protracted downpour.

If you’re looking to avoid hurricanes and high temps, Barceló Hotel Group has a few suggestions on optimal travel times to the Caribbean.

December Through May

Overall, the best months for a Caribbean getaway fall between December and May, a period that is also considered peak travel season for the region.

For most Caribbean nations, the winter months mean the sun is out all day and temperatures hover around a near-perfect 77 degrees.

The Christmas holidays are a perfect time to explore Mexico, the Dominican Republic or Costa Rica. On the flip side, the beaches tend to be packed during this time. The same goes for Spring Break when many Europeans and Americans flock to the region during their school and Easter breaks.

Rates, too, can be elevated during this busy time of year.

June Through November

Between June and November, rain can frequently mar the sought-after panoramic postcard views of idyllic beaches. The heat also increases, which should most definitely be taken into consideration when traveling to the Caribbean during summer and fall.

What’s more, Barceló Hotel Group also reminds visitors to take care when lounging in the sun during peak hours in the summer months, as the sun is stronger and there is a far greater chance of getting an unpleasant sunburn.

If you travel between August and November, it is also good to know that this is peak hurricane season in regions like Mexico’s Riviera Maya, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

In general, strong cyclones tend to be uncommon, so if you can’t change your travel dates, don’t let the fear of inclement weather stop you from exploring the region. If a hurricane does form, warnings are often provided well in advance, giving travelers time to plan accordingly.

Still, if hurricanes are a concern, try to avoid travel from the end of August through September, when the probability of a tropical storm increases.

Also, it’s rare for Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia to be affected by cyclones, (storm season there usually comes early, from July through September,) so these might be good alternatives to some of the more traditionally known Caribbean destinations.

Storms in these countries tend to pass quickly, meaning a quick return to beach weather, so they are great options for low-season travel.

If you prefer to minimize your risks, a cruise might be the best option, as cruise lines usually alter itineraries if a storm approaches, which means your vacation remains safe. Or plan to visit islands located further south, such as Curaçao or Bonaire, Aruba where there is less of a risk of a downpour.

On a positive note, the low season also means airlines and travel companies usually offer special deals, so this is a great time for travelers on a budget.

Riviera Maya

Whether you plan to explore the Mayan ruins or take advantage of sunny beach days, the best time to visit the Riviera Maya is between December and May.

The sun is out, but not excessively harsh, and the sea is also pleasantly warm during this period, making it perfect for a refreshing dip. With the exception of Christmas and Easter, there are many travel deals for this region during these months. An eagle-eyed consumer with a top-notch travel agent can even find hotels from the Barceló Group on sale for up to 60 percent off their regular rates.

Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, the rainy season falls between June and November, while the dry season ranges from December to May, which is when locals prefer to explore their country. Dry season might be a bit of a misnomer, though, because rainstorms can happen year-round due to the tropical climate.

It is also good to note that weather patterns can vary significantly across the country. If you’re planning a surf getaway, for example, the Pacific region has its biggest waves between June and November, while the Caribbean coast is preferable from November through May.

Dominican Republic

Although it can rain any time of year in the Dominican Republic, March tends to be the driest month. In fact, the country has two rainy seasons, one in October and November and the other from May through June, which is also the optimal time for hurricane-strength winds. Punta Cana, Monte Cristi, Puerto Plata and Barahona tend to have the best climate throughout the year.

Cuba

April and May are among the best months to visit Cuba because the hurricane season has yet to begin and the sun blesses Varadero and Los Cayos beaches. In general, Cuba’s dry season ranges from December through May.
